Balancing Act - Issue 3: Section 2

Q I do travel a lot and eat out, what can I do to still lose weight?

A Eating out is just a part of our lives today. With traveling and busy schedules, sometimes it becomes a necessity.

Here are my guidelines when I eat out:

First off, don't be shy about asking the server to have your food prepared the way you want it. Remember, your paying for it, so don't feel guilty. Sometimes, my family rolls their eyes when I order, knowing how picky I am. I just tell the waiter right off the bat - "Ok, I'm sorry but I'm going to be a big pain in the butt but"... They usually laugh and are more than happy to get me what I want and if for some reason I don't get it the way I ordered it, I send it back , remembering I'm paying for it!

Refuse the bread basket and instead order a salad for an appetizer (topped with lemons - not dressing - which is full of calories and hydrogenated fats.)

Drink plenty of water

Remember these terms: braised, broiled, grilled, lean, poached, roasted, steamed and sauted. These are the healthiest ways for food to be prepared and always ask to add no extra oil or butter to the food.

Replace the fries, etc with steamed veggies

One trick is to order a "to go box" with your food and put half of your food in it right away ( since serving sizes are over the top at restaurants) this will help you to not overeat and give you lunch the next day. Another great idea is split the meal with someone else. Not only will you save calories but money, as well!

***Note, I try to not eat the fish at restaurants because it is usually farm raised. Unless it says "Wild Salmon," I avoid it. Farm raised fish are known to have greater amounts of PCB's and other toxins including dye to give that pink color of wild salmon!

Sometimes I will sneak in my own source of protein and just order a salad with lemon
