Balancing Act - Issue 7: Section 2

CHOICE

But choices can only be made if we have the freedom to do so. Everyday, our freedoms are being stripped from us for "our own good". Tell me, why would I give my rights to another human being? If humans are imperfect and the government is made up of humans, then the government is imperfect (one can just look at the FDA to see that) and I can make enough stupid mistakes on my own - I don't need the government's help. Please understand, I do believe there is a need for some government regulations and interference. Every society needs its laws for the protection of its citizens and let's face it, there are many out there that have no self-control and for the protection of themselves and/or others need the government to step in. But once the government starts making sweeping judgments and wants to regulate everyone on everything... that's when we start having problems.

As I mentioned, I come from a family of immigrants who knew oppression, having fled after the revolution in Iran. Nearly all immigrants come here for a better life - a life filled with hope, possibility and... freedom. How awful for them to realize, once they've entered our pearly gates, that we are becoming no better than the countries they struggled to flee.

But many of us who were born here, don't see the struggles of these brave souls and have become stagnant. Did you know that one in five Americans still think that the sun revolves around the earth? And worse - they don't care. Not realizing ignorance breeds oppression. They don't realize that if they have no knowledge and understanding, they are ripe for abuse and can easily be sold any "bill of goods". Can anyone say Brave New World? We have been forced drugs we don't need, food we don't want and been told how to live our lives because how dare we little people think we know what's best for us?
