OTHER TIPS:
* Don't use ATMs alone at night
* Don't let your guard down with strangers-even the most charming men can be dangerous
* Keep your distance when talking to strangers
* Be aware of your surroundings. Don't be distracted by your cell phone, or Ipod when you are walking or exercising outside. I always keep one ear open ( and try to go when it is light outside)
* Run on the sidewalks- not in the streets- a big pet peeve of mine as well as very unsafe.
* Never pull out money from your purse in public. Keep a few dollars in your pocket, if you want to give to the needy.
* Try to do your shopping in the day or go with a friend if out at night. The Buddy System is great.
* Know your surroundings and always look around you when entering or exiting a place. Try to stay in populated areas if going for a stroll
* Walk with head up and shoulders back. The more confident you are, the less of an easy target you look.
* If you feel in danger, pull out your cell phone and pretend to talk to someone.
* Try not to wear hoodies or pony tails when out and alone- They are much easier to grab you by
* Do dress smart. I always keep a pair of tennis shoes in my car if I am going out in heels. That way if my car does breaks down, I can change into something easier to move in.
* If out, be aware of your drink, never leave it alone. Someone may slip something in it. And don't drink too much alcohol you lose your ability to think
* Keep your purse with you at all times. Forget clutch purses and go with one that has a strap over the head and shoulder ( this is great when using the public restroom as well)
* Always meet someone you don't know in a public place.
* Don't give out personal information over the internet. Tell this to your teenagers!!!!
* Always carry cash with you when on a date
* Keep your house doors locked and get to know your neighbors-keep an eye out for each other.
* If away on vacation, get someone to pick up the mail and even park in your driveway while you are away.
* If facing a potential attack- run, scream, curse, make as much noise as possible. This is not the time to be a lady. Do make your first strike count. You may not be physically stronger but you can catch him by surprise
* However, do give up your money or possessions if someone threatens you with a weapon. Your life is more important than anything in your purse
* Try to remember something about the attacker to describe to the police.
* Do think of defending a loved one when you fight back
