The recent birth of my fourth grandbaby filled my heart with joy and inspired me to whip up a special care package for my daughter-in-law and her little one. As I packed up some cozy essentials and homemade goodies, I included a jar of my favorite DIY Baby Bottom Butter—a nourishing balm that’s been a skin-saver for my family and client’s. In a world filled with chemical-laden skincare products, there’s something deeply empowering about crafting your own natural remedies, especially for a new mama and her baby. This simple balm harnesses the power of nature to soothe diaper rash, hydrate dry skin, and leave any skin—baby or adult—as smooth as a baby’s bottom. It makes a thoughtful, heartfelt gift for new mothers, and I’m excited to share this recipe with you so you can spread the love, too.

Why Make Your Own Baby Bottom Butter?

Store-bought creams often contain synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and other questionable ingredients that can irritate sensitive skin. By making your own Baby Bottom Butter, you control what goes into it, ensuring only pure, natural goodness touches your skin or your baby’s. This recipe is versatile—perfect for soothing diaper rash, healing cracked heels, or moisturizing dry patches. It’s a must-have for new moms, who’ll appreciate its gentle, effective care for their newborns and themselves during those tender postpartum days. Plus, it’s cost-effective and a joy to create!

The star ingredients—grass-fed tallow, organic olive oil, optional beeswax, and a potent herbal blend—work together to nourish, protect, and repair skin. Tallow, rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, mimics the natural oils in our skin, making it deeply moisturizing. Olive oil adds a dose of antioxidants and hydration, while beeswax, if used, provides a protective barrier and firmer texture. The herbs—calendula, chickweed, comfrey root, and marshmallow root—bring anti-inflammatory, soothing, and healing properties to the mix.

Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make about 1 cup of Baby Bottom Butter balm:

1 cup grass-fed, grass-finished tallow: Sourced from healthy, pasture-raised animals for maximum nutrient density.

1.5 tablespoons organic cold-pressed olive oil: Adds extra hydration and antioxidants (optional for softer consistency).

1 ounce beeswax pellets or grated beeswax (optional): Adds firmness and a protective barrier to the balm.

1 cup (by volume) of dried herbs (equal parts, about ¼ cup each):

Calendula flower: Soothes inflammation and promotes skin healing.

Chickweed (aerial parts): Calms itching and irritation, perfect for sensitive skin.

Comfrey root: Speeds up skin repair and reduces inflammation.

Marshmallow root: Hydrates and soothes dry, irritated skin.

Equipment

Double boiler (or a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water)

Thin towel and potato ricer (or cheesecloth/fine mesh strainer)

Measuring cups and spoons

Emulsion blender (optional for whipped texture)

Clean, dry glass jars or small containers for storage

Directions

Step 1: Infuse the Tallow with Herbs

Set up a double boiler by filling the bottom pot with a few inches of water and placing the top pot or a heat-safe bowl over it. Bring the water to a gentle simmer.

In the top of the double boiler, melt 1 cup of grass-fed tallow over low heat until it becomes a clear liquid.

Once melted, add 1 cup (by volume) of dried herbs (equal parts calendula, chickweed, comfrey root, and marshmallow root).

Keep the heat low (around 110–120°F) and let the herbs infuse for about an hour, stirring occasionally. An hour is sufficient for a potent blend, though longer infusion can enhance the balm’s potency. The double boiler ensures gentle heating to avoid cooking the herbs and preserve their beneficial properties.

Step 2: Strain the Mixture

After infusing, remove the top pot or bowl from heat and prepare to strain the tallow to remove herb particles.

Place a thin towel inside a potato ricer (or use cheesecloth/fine mesh strainer) and pour the warm tallow mixture through it. Squeeze the towel or cheesecloth to extract as much infused tallow as possible.

Discard the spent herbs (or compost them!).

Step 3: Add Olive Oil and Beeswax (Optional)

If using beeswax for a firmer texture, return the strained tallow to the double boiler and add 1 ounce of beeswax pellets or grated beeswax. Heat gently on low until the beeswax fully melts, stirring to combine.

If you’d like a softer consistency, stir in 1.5 tablespoons of organic cold-pressed olive oil while the mixture is still warm and liquid. Both the olive oil and beeswax are optional; olive oil softens the balm, while beeswax adds a protective, firmer texture.

Step 4: Pour or Whip and Set

You have two options for finishing your Baby Bottom Butter balm:

Option 1: Simple Pour

Pour the warm, liquid mixture directly into clean, dry glass jars or small containers.

Let it cool completely at room temperature, where it will solidify into a creamy balm (or firmer salve if beeswax is used). Congratulations, your Baby Bottom Butter balm is ready!

Option 2: Whipped Texture

Let the mixture cool slightly until it’s still liquid but not yet solidified.

Using an emulsion blender, whip the mixture until it becomes smooth and creamy, resembling a luxurious lotion.

Pour or scoop the whipped balm into clean, dry glass jars or containers.

Allow it to cool completely at room temperature to set.

Your Baby Bottom Butter balm will stay fresh for up to 6 months when stored in a cool, dry place.

How to Use Baby Bottom Butter

This versatile balm is a skin savior for all ages and a perfect addition to a new mom’s care package. Because it’s made with pure herbs and free of artificial fragrances or essential oils, it has a natural, slightly earthy scent rather than a perfumy aroma—think wholesome and grounding, like a walk through an herb garden. Mamas, embrace its natural charm, as it’s this purity that makes it so gentle and effective!

For Babies: Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin during diaper changes to soothe and prevent diaper rash. The anti-inflammatory herbs and nourishing tallow create a protective barrier against moisture and irritation, enhanced by beeswax if used.

For New Moms: Use on dry skin, stretch marks, or sore nipples for gentle hydration and healing. Important: If applying to nipples while breastfeeding, wash off the balm thoroughly with warm water and mild soap before nursing to ensure no herbs (especially comfrey, which may be harmful if ingested) or beeswax remain, as their safety for infant ingestion is not established. The balm is also great for minor cuts, scrapes, or chapped lips.

How to Apply: Scoop a small amount with clean fingers, warm it between your hands, and massage gently into the skin. A little goes a long way!

Tips for Success (The Wise & Wild Way)

Source Quality Ingredients: Opt for grass-fed, grass-finished tallow from a trusted local farm or online supplier. Organic, cold-pressed olive oil and pure, unfiltered beeswax (if using) ensure purity.

Herb Sourcing: Use high-quality, organic dried herbs from a reputable supplier to maximize potency. Fresh herbs can introduce moisture and spoil the balm.

Storage: Keep your balm in a cool, dry place. If you live in a warm climate, store it in the fridge to maintain its texture.

Texture Preference: The whipped version (Option 2) is smoother and lotion-like, while the poured version (Option 1) is denser (and firmer with beeswax). I included both in my grandbaby’s care package so my daughter could choose!

Patch Test: If using on a baby or sensitive skin, test a small amount on a patch of skin first to ensure no irritation occurs.

The Benefits of Going Natural

Crafting your own Baby Bottom Butter isn’t just about skincare—it’s about reclaiming control over what you put on your body. By choosing natural ingredients, you’re avoiding harmful chemicals and supporting your skin’s natural ability to heal and thrive. This balm is a testament to the power of simple, time-tested ingredients working in harmony, making it a cherished gift for new mothers nurturing their newborns.

Not only is this balm effective, but it’s also a joy to make. The process connects you to age-old traditions of herbalism and self-care, and the result is a product you can trust for your family. As I put together my care package for my new grandbaby, I felt such pride knowing this homemade balm would soothe and protect that precious skin. Whether you’re soothing a baby’s delicate skin, treating your own dry patches, or gifting it to a new mom, this balm delivers results that rival any store-bought cream—without the mystery ingredients.

Final Thoughts

My Baby Bottom Butter is more than just a skincare product; it’s a step toward healthier, more intentional living and a heartfelt way to show love. Welcoming my fourth grandbaby reminded me how special it is to share homemade remedies that nurture and heal. With just a few ingredients and a couple of hours, you can create a luxurious, multi-purpose balm that’s perfect for babies, new moms, or anyone needing a little extra care. So, gather your tallow, herbs, olive oil, and beeswax (if desired), and whip up a batch of this skin-loving goodness. It’s a gift that keeps on giving—your skin (and your baby’s bottom) will thank you!

Hair loss can feel like a relentless thief—stealing confidence one strand at a time. While the world pushes pricey potions, pills, and implants, these so-called solutions come with a laundry list of risks that might leave you worse off. Potions like minoxidil can irritate your scalp, cause unwanted facial hair, or even tank your blood pressure—some users report dizziness or heart palpitations. Pills like finasteride mess with hormones, risking low libido, erectile dysfunction, brain fog, or even depression—side effects that can linger long after you stop. Implants? Think infection, scalp scarring, unnatural-looking plugs, or rejection of the grafts, plus the hefty cost and recovery time.

Why gamble with your health when there’s a simpler, safer way? Bentonite clay, celebrated by many sharp minds including Dr. Andrew Kaufman’s Hair Regrowth Protocol, could be your ticket to healthier hair and a happier scalp—without the chemical chaos or scars. Here’s how it works, why it matters, and how to make it part of your fight against hair loss.

Why Hair Loss Happens

Most chalk up baldness to hormones—too much androgen in men, or shifts during pregnancy and menopause in women. But there’s more to the story. Studies show hair follicles often harbor chemical pollutants—think heavy metals, phthalates, and flame retardants. These toxins mess with your body’s natural balance, clogging follicles and speeding up hair loss. Add a diet low in collagen and key nutrients (such as a plant-based diet), and your scalp’s crying for help. Bentonite clay steps in to help tackle the toxic side of this equation.

Bentonite Clay: Nature’s Detox Dynamo

Bentonite clay—specifically calcium bentonite—is a volcanic ash turned mineral-rich paste that’s been used for centuries to cleanse and heal. Its magic lies in its negative charge, which acts like a magnet for positively charged toxins. When you slather it on your scalp, it pulls out endocrine-disrupting chemicals and metals that might be choking your hair follicles. The result? A cleaner, less inflamed scalp—prime real estate for hair to grow back stronger.

How It Helps Hair Loss

Detoxifies the Scalp: By absorbing pollutants, bentonite clay clears the gunk that could be stunting hair growth. Think of it as a deep clean for your follicles.

Reduces Inflammation: Toxins often irritate the scalp, leading to inflammation that weakens hair roots. Clay soothes this, creating a healthier environment.

Boosts Nutrient Delivery: With junk out of the way, your scalp can better use nutrients from a collagen-rich diet (more on that later)—fuel for regrowth.

Dr. Kaufman’s protocol highlights this detox power, suggesting it’s a key prep step for optimal hair regrowth. Pair it with sweating and a clean diet, and you’re hitting hair loss from multiple angles.

Whisk until it’s a thick, lump-free paste.

Apply: Wet your hair lightly, then work the paste into your scalp with your fingers. Cover every inch of your scalp—don’t skimp!

Try egg yolks (whisk 1-2 pasture-raised yolks, massage into your scalp, rinse with cool water) or my no-poo method for a clean that nourishes without stripping. If you must use shampoo, pick something like Avalon Organics. If you color your hair, go with a natural option like henna—chemical dyes clog your scalp with toxins, tanking hair growth and wrecking not just your scalp health, but overall health.

Sweat It Out: Get in the sun, take a detox bath, hop in the sauna, and/or exercise 3 times a week—great for purging chemicals that mess with hair growth. Sweating and exercise ramps up lymph movement – your body’s built-in detox system – pushing toxins out of your body so they don’t stall your scalp’s comeback. Looking for fun ways to move? My Peak Performance Training and Stretch for Performance classes found on SPBTV will do the trick—no dull workouts here.
After a good sweat, wash right away—those toxins you just kicked out of your skin and scalp? Don’t let ‘em soak back in.

Eat Collagen-Rich Foods: Aim for the equivalent of at least one cup of gelatinous meat stock or bone broth daily for a minimum of three months—real food (animal foods) that rebuilds your hair from the inside out. Skip the collagen powders—eat the good stuff instead; it’s what your body actually uses.

Choose a Nourishing Diet: Dr. Kaufman recommends the BBBE Carnivore Diet (beef, butter, bacon, eggs) for its nutrient density, but I prefer the nutrient-dense variety of traditional foods found in the GAPS or Nourishing Traditions diets, which I incorporate into my Wise & Wild Way program. These deliver collagen-rich options—think gelatinous meat stock or bone broth; hormone-supporting foods like animal fats, eggs, and cultured dairy; and fermented foods such as sauerkraut that rebuild your gut microbiome and clear detox pathways, especially in your liver—to keep toxins from hindering your hair growth. Toss in organ meats, and your system thrives. It’s real fuel for regrowth and whole-body healing.

Bonus: My Monthly
Two-Day Turbo Boost

Once a month, crank it up with this powerhouse boost: Mix 10 drops rosemary essential oil to wake up your follicles, 1 tablespoon olive oil to keep things hydrated, and 1 teaspoon castor oil to get blood flowing. Rub it into your scalp at night—your hair soaks it up while you’re snoozing. Next morning, rinse it off with my no-poo method or a bentonite clay wash (just mix some clay in water, scrub and rinse.) Do this two days in a row—it’s a real supercharge for regrowth.

Why it works: Rosemary fires up follicle growth (research shows it rivals minoxidil!), olive oil locks in moisture to fight dryness, and castor oil boosts circulation to wake up sleepy roots—your scalp gets a serious jolt.

What to Expect

Don’t expect a mane overnight—hair regrowth is a slow burn. After 3 months, you might notice less shedding or new fuzz. Most see peak results in 6-12 months, per Kaufman’s protocol. Patience is key, but the payoff’s worth it: thicker, healthier hair without the chemical crap.

Why It’s Worth a Try

Bentonite clay isn’t a miracle cure, but it’s a low-risk, high-reward move. It’s dirt-cheap (pun intended), natural, and sidesteps the side effects of drugs like minoxidil—irritation, weird hair growth, you name it—or the scars from implants. Plus, it’s backed by a logic that’s hard to argue with—clean out the bad to let the good thrive. If toxins are part of your hair loss puzzle, this could be the missing piece.

Give it a go—your scalp might just thank you with a few extra strands.

Listen up, ladies—bath time isn’t just for splashing around or scrubbing off the day. It’s your chance to hit reset, detox your mind, body, and spirit, and walk out feeling like a radiant leading lady! I’m all about keeping it real, and my bathtime ritual is no exception—no overpriced spa, just simple, natural ingredients that work like a charm. You know I’m all about guiding you to ditch the junk and live pure, and this luxurious detox soak is a cornerstone of that life.

Ready to turn your tub into a sanctuary? Let’s dive into my step-by-step ritual.

Step 1: Set the Mood with Beeswax Candles

What to Do: Dim the lights, light a couple of beeswax candles, and place them safely around your bathroom (no towel bonfires, please). Let the soft glow and subtle honey scent wash over you as you prepare your bath.

Why It Works: Beeswax candles burn clean—no toxic fumes like paraffin candles—and their warm light soothes your mind, creating a spa-like feel that screams luxury. It’s a simple way to detox your spirit, letting stress melt away while you connect with your inner calm.

Tip: Never leave candles unattended—safety first! If beeswax is out of budget, soy candles are a decent backup, but nothing beats the real deal.

Step 2: Dry Brush for a Head-to-Toe Glow

What to Do: Grab a natural-bristle dry brush and gently brush your skin in long, upward strokes toward your heart—start at your feet, work up your legs, then hit your arms and torso. Spend 3-5 minutes before hopping in the tub.

Why It Works: Dry brushing sloughs off dead skin (hello, silky smoothness), boosts circulation (think instant energy), and gets your lymphatic system moving (bye-bye, toxins). It’s like a wake-up call for your body, prepping it to soak up all the detox goodness to come.

Tip: Brush gently—your skin’s not a rusty skillet! Do this 2-3 times a week for best results, and always clean your brush with soap and water afterward to keep it fresh.

Step 3: Build Your Detox Bath Blend

What to Do: Fill your tub with warm (not scalding) water and add:

½ cup bentonite clay—sprinkle it in slowly while the water runs to avoid clumps or use a bath bag for easier clean up.

1 cup magnesium bath crystals (or pure Epsom salt).

3-5 drops of your favorite essential oils—lavender for calm, eucalyptus for a detox boost, or orange for a mood lift.

Stir the water to mix it all up, then slide in for a 20-30 minute soak.

Why It Works: Bentonite clay pulls toxins from your skin like a magnet, plus it’s packed with minerals to nourish you. Magnesium crystals melt away muscle tension and boost your body’s magnesium levels—crucial for stress relief. Essential oils work their magic on your spirit, calming your mind or giving you a zesty pick-me-up, depending on what you choose. This trio turns your bath into a detox powerhouse.

Tip: Test essential oils on a small patch of skin first—nobody wants a rash ruining their soak. If clay’s hard to rinse off, use a washcloth or follow with a quick shower.

Step 4: Scrub with Activated Charcoal Soap

What to Do: While soaking, lather up with activated charcoal soap, focusing on areas prone to sweat or grime (armpits, feet, you know the spots). Rinse off in the bathwater or under the shower afterward.

Why It Works: Activated charcoal is like a sponge for impurities—it draws out dirt, oil, and toxins from your skin, leaving you squeaky clean and refreshed. It’s gentle enough for daily use but tough on the gunk, making it perfect for a detox ritual.

Tip: Look for charcoal soap with natural ingredients—skip the fake fragrances. Keep it in a draining dish so it doesn’t turn into a soggy mess.

Step 5: Seal the Deal with Homemade Tallow Balm

What to Do: After your soak, pat dry gently and slather on homemade tallow balm from head to toe—focus on dry spots like elbows, knees, and heels. Massage it in for maximum moisture.

Why It Works: Tallow balm (made from rendered beef fat and natural oils) is a moisturizing superhero—it sinks deep into your skin, locking in hydration and leaving you soft as silk. It’s packed with nutrients like vitamins A and E, helping your skin recover from the detox while keeping it nourished.

Tip: Make your own tallow balm with grass-fed tallow, olive oil, and essential oil for scent—store it in a glass jar. If tallow’s not your thing, coconut oil works too, but it’s less rich.

Step 6: Rest and Recharge

What to Do: Slip into cozy pajamas, sip some herbal tea (chamomile’s my go-to), and let the calm carry you to bed. No screens—just bask in the peace and prep for a restful night’s sleep.

Why It Works: Your body’s been detoxed, your skin’s glowing, and your mind’s at ease—now’s the time to let it all sink in. A good night’s sleep seals the deal, helping your body repair and recharge so you wake up radiant and energized.

Tip: Keep your bedroom cool and dark for the best sleep. If you’re wired from the day, try prayer or meditation to settle your spirit—works like a charm.

The Catch: Keep It Smart

Always test new ingredients on a small patch of skin—nobody’s got time for irritation.

Stay hydrated—drink water before and after your soak to help flush toxins.

Keep your bath supplies out of reach of kids—essential oils and clay aren’t toys.

Elevate It, Wise & Wild Style

Detox Your Hair: Pair with my no-poo shampoo for a full-body cleanse—scalp included.

Detox Your Body: Try some of my other bath recipes.

Stay Grounded: Spend a moment thanking God for your health—for the ultimate glow

Why Bother?

This bathtime ritual isn’t just a soak—it’s a gift to yourself. It detoxes your body, calms your mind, and lifts your spirit, all while keeping things simple and natural. Stepping out of that tub feel like a rebirth, a new beginning— preparing you for a restful night and a vibrant tomorrow.

Keeping it green in your home isn’t just healthier for you, your family, and the planet—it’s a win for your wallet, too. Mixing simple ingredients to make your own cleaners saves cash, and I’m all about that life. Many of those so-called “green cleaners” still sneak in questionable junk and cost a fortune, and don’t even get me started on conventional cleaners—forget about it!

I used to dread cleaning day, but these quick recipes turned my home into a pure, toxin-free haven, and they’ll do the same for you.

As you know, in my Wise & Wild Way workshop, I’m all about ditching the junk and living clean—body, mind, spirit and home. Here are some simple DIY recipes to freshen up your space, no fancy stuff needed. Let’s get to it!

In the Laundry

Soften and Refresh Clothes: Add ¼ cup Epsom salt to your wash cycle.

Why It Works: Epsom salt softens hard water, letting your detergent clean better so clothes feel softer and look fresher—no more scratchy towels.

Tip: Pair with sunlight drying for a natural brightness boost—your shirts will love the sunshine.

Whiten Whites: Soak whites overnight in warm water with 1 scoop oxygen bleach, then wash, adding ½ cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle.

Why It Works: Oxygen bleach releases hydrogen peroxide to whiten safely, while vinegar in the rinse cuts residue for extra crispness.

Tips: Use warm water to activate the oxygen bleach better—don’t let it cool off too much. Don’t mix oxygen bleach and vinegar in the soak—they’ll cancel each other out; keep vinegar for the rinse only.

In the Dryer: Toss in wool dryer balls instead of chemical-laden softener sheets—they keep clothes soft and static-free the natural way. Check out my full article on dryer balls for the details.

In the Kitchen

Streak-Free Dishes: Use white vinegar instead of rinse aid. Fill the rinse dispenser.

Why It Works: Vinegar cuts soap residue and prevents water spots, leaving dishes sparkling.

Countertop and Cutting Board Spray: Wash counters or cutting boards with soap and water, then spray with white vinegar and let air-dry.

How to Use: Spray vinegar on surfaces, let sit 5 minutes (especially after raw meat), and leave to air-dry—no wiping needed.

Why It Works: Soap and water clean off grime, vinegar kills most meat-related germs and cuts residue—your kitchen stays safe and fresh.

Tips: For wooden cutting boards, rinse and dry occasionally to avoid drying out. Don’t use on untreated countertops like marble—vinegar can etch the surface.

In the Bathroom

Scouring Scrub: Mix ½ cup baking soda with ¼ cup salt, add water (or 3% hydrogen peroxide for extra power) to make a paste. Store in a container with a lid; mix fresh if using peroxide.

Why It Works: Baking soda and salt scrub away grime; water makes a solid paste, while optional peroxide kills germs and lifts stains—your tub will shine either way.

Tip: Got hard water stains? Pre-soak with white vinegar, then scrub—don’t mix vinegar in the paste, it’ll fizzle out the power because vinegar and baking soda cancel each other out.

Scrubby Gloves Trick: Use body exfoliating gloves (just not the same ones you wash with) to clean crevices around tubs and floors.

Tub Scrub Hack: Keep an over-the-cupboard caddy under your sink with scrubby gloves and homemade scouring scrub—clean the tub right after your shower.

Deodorizing Carpets

Baking Soda Freshener: Sprinkle baking soda on carpets, let sit 1 hour, vacuum.

Orange Peel Powder Boost: In a coffee grinder, grind fully dried orange peel into powder, mix with baking soda, sprinkle on carpets, let sit 1 hour, vacuum.

Why It Works: Baking soda kills odors with an hour to tackle deep smells, orange peel adds a citrus zing to your carpets and vacuum.

Tip: In a rush? 15 minutes works for a quick refresh, but an hour gets the real stink out.

Cleaners

Window Cleaner: Mix ½ cup water, ½ cup white vinegar, and 1 drop liquid castile soap (not too much, just enough to cut greasy smudges without residue) in a spray bottle.

Why It Works: Vinegar cuts streaks, one drop of soap tackles greasy smudges.

Oxygen Bleach Soak: For stained sinks/tubs: Fill with warm water, add 2-3 Tbsp oxygen bleach, soak overnight, scrub. For toilets: Add 1 Tbsp to toilet water, soak overnight, scrub.

Why It Works: Oxygen bleach makes stains vanish.

Wood Polishing Furniture Oil: Mix ¼ cup olive oil, 2 Tbsp white vinegar, and 5 drops lemon extract (or 5 drops orange essential oil for a citrus kick) in a small jar—great for sealed wood furniture and floors.

How to Use: Dip a soft cloth into the oil, rub onto wood furniture or sealed floors in circular motions (use a thin layer on floors to avoid slipping), then wipe with a clean cloth to remove excess—buff for a shiny glow.

Why It Works: Olive oil nourishes and conditions wood, vinegar cleans off grime, lemon extract adds a fresh scent and cuts light residue—your wood will look loved again.

Tip: Test on a small spot first—some finishes don’t love vinegar; don’t use on unsealed wood floors, it’ll get greasy and slippery; reapply every few months to keep wood hydrated.

All Purpose Cleaner: ½ cup liquid castile soap, ¼ tsp baking soda, 1 cup cold water, optional 2½ Tbsp witch hazel (for extra cleaning), optional ¼ tsp tea tree extract (for disinfecting), optional 4 drops orange essential oil (for scent)

How to Make: Mix soap, baking soda, and water in a spray bottle; add witch hazel, tea tree extract, and essential oil if using, then shake gently and thoroughly.

Use: Spray and wipe—great for counters, floors, you name it.

Why It Works: Baking soda boosts cleaning, soap tackles grime, optional tea tree disinfects—your house will be spotless.

Tip: Cleaner may settle, if so, just give the bottle the ol’ shakeroo.

Keep out of reach of kids—obviously.

Double batches if your house is a mess magnet like mine.

I’ll admit it—I used to scrub my strawberries like I was prepping for surgery, only to pop one in my mouth and wonder if I’d just eaten a pesticide buffet. I’d rinse my spinach, feeling smug about my clean eating, but the truth? Those store-bought washes were mostly water with a fancy label—and a hefty price. Then it dawned on me: why trust a bottle when I could clean my produce with stuff I already trust? That’s when I whipped up this fruit and veggie wash, and now my kitchen feels like a sanctuary for real food again.

In my Wise & Wild Way workshop, I’m all about stripping away the junk and honoring the body and soul you were designed to live in with simple, natural solutions. This DIY wash does just that—keeping your fruits and veggies pure without the chemical nonsense. Let’s dive into why this wash is a must for your kitchen, how to make it, a bonus trick to tackle bugs, and a few things to watch out for.

What Makes This DIY Fruit and Veggie Wash So Good?

This wash is a no-fuss blend of fresh lemon juice, distilled white vinegar, cold filtered water, and an optional sprinkle of salt. Lemon juice is a natural disinfectant that cuts through waxes and germs, while vinegar adds an extra punch to kill bacteria. The filtered water keeps it pure, and the salt flushes out dirt and bugs. It’s cheaper than those overpriced sprays and leaves no weird aftertaste—because who wants their blueberries tasting like a science lab?

Why It’s a Must for Your Kitchen (and Your Health)

Here’s why this DIY wash beats the store-bought stuff:

No Chemical Gunk: Commercial washes often sneak in preservatives that linger on your food. This mix keeps it clean and safe.

Kills Germs Naturally: Lemon and vinegar tackle pesticides and bacteria without harsh chemicals—your salad won’t fight back.

Removes Wax and Dirt: That shiny apple? It’s often waxed. This wash strips it off, leaving the real fruit behind.

Bug Buster: The salt trick helps bugs float to the surface—say goodbye to stowaways in your lettuce.

DIY Fruit and Veggie Wash: Clean Produce, No Fuss

Forget the pricey bottles—here’s how to make your own wash that actually works:

Ingredients:

1 Tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice (organic is best—natural disinfectant)

1 cup distilled white vinegar (for extra disinfectant power)

2 cups cold, filtered water

Optional: sprinkle of salt

Directions:

Pour the lemon juice, vinegar, and water into a clean spray bottle.

Add a sprinkle of salt (if using), then cap and shake until mixed.

How to Use It:

Spray on fruits and veggies, let sit for 5 minutes, and scrub if needed. Rinse under cold, filtered water.

For berries, lettuce, etc.: Fill a bowl with filtered water, add a few sprays of the wash, soak for 5 minutes, swish, drain, and rinse.

Tip: Double the batch if you’re prepping a week’s worth of produce—my husband eats like it’s a competition.

Bonus: Salt Trick to Flush Out Bugs

Want to kick bugs to the curb? Try this:

Ingredients:

Extra sprinkle of salt

How to Use:

Add a bit of (extra) salt to your bowl of water with the wash, soak leafy veggies for 5 minutes, and watch bugs float up.

Rinse thoroughly to keep the flavor pure.

Why It Works: Salt helps dislodge and float out those sneaky bugs—perfect for your greens.

The Caveats: What to Watch For

This wash is simple, but here’s what to keep in mind:

Lemon Sting: If your hands get irritated, wear gloves or dilute with more water. I once scrubbed too long and felt like I’d lemon-juiced my skin—oops.

Vinegar Kick: It’s strong but fades after rinsing. Skip the rinse, and your apples might taste like a salad dressing gone wrong.

Delicate Produce: Soak berries for 5 minutes max, or they’ll turn to mush—learned that the hard way with raspberries.

Herbicide Heads-Up: Plain water won’t remove herbicides—this wash is a great defense. For the best defense, buy organic only. For a better than best defense, grow your own produce or buy from a local, regenerative farmer!

Organic Matters: Stick to organic lemon and filtered water for anything you’re eating—don’t let cheap shortcuts undo your efforts.

Elevate It, Wise & Wild Style

Take this wash to the next level with my holistic approach:

Detox Your Hair: Since you’re cleaning your food, why not your personal care? Try my no-poo shampoo method to ditch chemical hair products—your scalp will glow as bright as your veggies.

Detox Your Body: Soak in a detox bath to flush toxins—pair it with your clean produce for a full reset. See my detox bath article for details.

Grow you own Produce or Get to Know your Local, Regenerative Farmer. Hey, we know even the “organic’ label has been compromised, so I make it a priority to buy from only regenerative famers. Get a list of local farmers in your area by locating a WAPF chapter leader near you!

Why It’s Worth Your Time

This DIY fruit and veggie wash isn’t just about clean produce—it’s about cleaning up your life, one bite at a time. It’s cheap, it works, and it lets you eat with peace of mind—no chemicals, no guilt. Want to feel good about every part of your routine? Start here. Your fruits, veggies, and conscience will thank you.

Mix it, spray it, enjoy it—pure produce is just the start of a cleaner life.

I thought my machine was the enemy, it just wouldn’t clean—every load left my glasses looking like they’d been through a dust storm, coated with a filmy residue that made me wonder if I should just wash them by hand. The real culprit? My store-bought detergent, packed with chemicals I wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole. Then it hit me: I’d been a purist about filtering my drinking water, feeling all proud of myself, only to pour it into a glass coated with chemical junk. Nope, not anymore. I decided to take matters into my own hands and whip up my own dishwasher detergent.

In my Wise & Wild Way Workshop I’m all about cutting the junk and getting back to what works—simple, natural solutions that honor the body and home you were designed to live in. This DIY dishwasher detergent is a perfect example: it’s cheap, it’s effective, and it doesn’t leave your dishes coated in mystery goo. Let’s break down why this natural mix is a must for your kitchen, how to make it, a bonus rinse trick for spot-free shine, and a few things to watch out for—because your dishes deserve to sparkle as much as your spirit does.

What Makes This DIY Dishwasher Detergent So Good?

This recipe is as straightforward as it gets: borax, washing soda, and food-grade citric acid. No synthetic fragrances, no chlorine bleach, just clean ingredients that get the job done. Borax and washing soda team up to break down grease and food gunk, while citric acid tackles hard water stains and keeps your dishes spot-free. It’s safe for your family, your dishwasher, and the planet—and who wants to eat off plates that smell like a chemical factory?

Why It’s a Must for Your Kitchen (and Your Peace of Mind)

Here’s why this DIY detergent is a game-changer:

No Chemical Residue: Store-bought detergents often leave behind traces of phosphates or chlorine, which can mess with your hormones and irritate your skin. This DIY mix keeps your dishes—and your family—clean and safe.

Spot-Free Shine: Citric acid fights hard water buildup, so your glasses come out sparkling, not cloudy. No more pretending that filmy wine glass is “vintage.”

Tough on Grease: Borax and washing soda cut through stuck-on food like nobody’s business. That casserole dish doesn’t stand a chance.

Eco-Friendly: It’s biodegradable and doesn’t pollute your water. You’re cleaning your dishes while honoring the world you were created to live in.

DIY Dishwasher Detergent: Clean Dishes, No Drama

Forget the overpriced pods—here’s how to make your own detergent that actually works:

Ingredients:

1 cup borax

1 cup washing soda

½ cup food-grade citric acid

Directions:

Mix the borax, washing soda, and citric acid together until well combined.

Transfer to a covered container—I keep mine under the sink for easy access.

How to Use It:

Use 1 Tbsp for a regular load, 2 Tbsp for a heavy load (think post-Thanksgiving disaster).

Add to your dishwasher’s detergent compartment and run as usual.

Tip: Double the recipe if you’re a dishwashing machine—I mean, if you use your dishwasher a lot. I do, because my family eats like it’s their job—and with all the new recipes I try—it is!

Bonus: Vinegar Rinse for That Extra Sparkle

Want your dishes to shine like they’re ready for a photo shoot? Add this simple rinse:

Ingredients:

Distilled white vinegar

How to Use:

Fill the rinse compartment of your dishwasher with distilled white vinegar.

Run the cycle as usual—your dishes will come out spot-free and shiny.

Why It Works: Vinegar breaks down any leftover mineral deposits and boosts the citric acid’s shine power. It’s like a little TLC for your plates and glasses. I’ve got more vinegar tricks in my clothes detergent article—because clean living is my jam.

The Caveats: What to Watch For

This detergent is a breeze, but here’s what to keep in mind:

Hard Water Woes: If your water is super hard, you might need a bit more citric acid—start with an extra tablespoon and see how it goes.

Borax Safety: It’s natural, but don’t eat it (duh). Keep it away from kids and pets, and don’t inhale the powder while mixing.

Glassware Check: If your glasses still look cloudy, your dishwasher might need a deep clean—run an empty cycle with a cup of vinegar on the top rack. Problem solved.

Citric Acid Quality: Make sure it’s food-grade—don’t grab the stuff from the hardware store. We’re cleaning dishes, not pipes.

Elevate It, Wise & Wild Style

Take this detergent to the next level with my wholistic approach:

Detox Your Hair: Since you’re cleaning up your kitchen, why not your personal care? Try my no-poo shampoo method to ditch the chemical-laden hair products—your scalp will thank you, and your hair will shine as bright as your dishes.

Detox Your Body: Soak in a detox bath to flush out toxins—a full-body reset that pairs perfectly with your toxin-free lifestyle. Check my detox bath article for more.

Breathe Deep: Take some cleansing breaths to clear the lungs and make your cells sing! Inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth with a sigh! Ahh, feels so good!

Why It’s Worth Your Time

This DIY dishwasher detergent isn’t just about clean plates—it’s about cleaning up your life, one load at a time. It’s cheap, it’s effective, and it lets you wash with peace of mind—no chemicals, no guilt. Want to feel good about every part of your routine? Start here. Your dishes (and your conscience) will thank you.

Mix it, use it, love it—clean dishes are just the beginning of a cleaner life.

I’ll never forget the day I looked at the label on my store-bought laundry detergent and thought, “Why am I washing my clothes in something I can’t even pronounce?” It hit me hard—here I was, trying to keep things clean and simple, but I was soaking my family’s clothes in a chemical soup. Dyes, fragrances, sulfates—stuff that irritates skin, messes with hormones, and lingers on your favorite sweater like an uninvited guest. No thanks. I knew there had to be a better way, and that’s when I started making my own clothing detergent.

In my Wise & Wild Way workshop, I’m all about stripping away the junk—literal and metaphorical—to create a life that honors the body and soul you were designed to live in. This DIY detergent isn’t just about clean clothes; it’s about cleaning up your whole routine, from your laundry to your spirit. Let’s break down why this natural detergent is a game-changer, how to make it, a bonus tip for softening fabrics, and a few things to watch out for—because you deserve a wash as pure as your intentions.

What Makes This DIY Clothing Detergent So Good?

This detergent is a powerhouse of simple, natural ingredients—no chemical nonsense here. It’s built on bar soap, borax, washing soda, and food-grade citric acid, with an optional oxygen bleach boost for tough stains. Environmental health expert Dr. Anne Steinemann points out that conventional detergents often contain allergens and irritants like sodium lauryl sulfate, which can cause rashes or worse. My recipe? It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin but tough enough to tackle dirt, as dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban notes about natural cleaners—they clean without stripping your skin or fabrics of their natural balance. It’s a win-win, and it costs pennies compared to the $20 bottles at the store.

Why It’s a Must for Your Laundry (and Your Life)

Here’s why this DIY detergent deserves a spot in your laundry room:

No Toxic Residue: Dr. Steinemann’s research shows that conventional detergents leave behind chemicals that can irritate skin and lungs. This recipe skips all that, keeping your clothes—and your family—safe.

Gentle on Skin: Shamban explains that natural ingredients like castile soap and citric acid clean without harshness, perfect for anyone with sensitive skin or allergies. No more itchy sweaters!

Tough on Stains: Borax and washing soda team up to lift dirt and grime, while the optional oxygen bleach tackles heavy stains like grass or wine—because life happens.

Eco-Friendly: It’s biodegradable and safe for the planet. You’re not just washing clothes; you’re washing with purpose, honoring the world you were created to steward.

DIY Clothing Detergent: Simple, Clean, Done

Ditch the chemical sludge—here’s how to make your own detergent that actually works:

Ingredients:

½ cup shaved bar soap (I love Dr. Bronner’s castile bar soap—pure and gentle)

1¾ cups borax

1¾ cups washing soda

¼ cup food-grade citric acid

(Optional: ¼ cup oxygen bleach for a whitening boost on heavy stains)

Directions

Shave the bar soap into fine flakes using a grater.

In your bowl, mix the shaved soap, borax, washing soda, citric acid, and oxygen bleach (if using) for several minutes until well combined.

Optional: Toss the mix into a blender or food processor to make a fine powder that dissolves easily, even in cold water. Just let the dust settle before opening the lid.

How to Use It:

Use 1 Tbsp for a small load, 2-3 Tbsp for large or heavily soiled loads.

Toss it into the drum of your washer (or the detergent compartment if it’s a fine powder).

Wash as usual.

Tip: Double the recipe if you’re doing laundry for a big family

Bonus: Vinegar Rinse for Soft, Fresh Fabrics

Want your clothes to feel as good as they smell? Add this simple rinse to your cycle:

Ingredients:

½ cup distilled white vinegar

How to Use:

Add the vinegar to your rinse cycle or the fabric softener dispenser.

Run the cycle as usual—no vinegar smell, I promise.

Why It Works: Vinegar softens fabrics, brightens whites, neutralizes odors, and removes soap residue. It’s like a big hug for your clothes, leaving them fresh and ready to wear. I’ve got more laundry tips in my detox bath article—because a clean life starts with the little things.

The Caveats: What to Watch For

This detergent is a dream, but here’s what to keep in mind:

Hard Water Woes: If your water is hard, you might need a bit more detergent—borax and washing soda help, but experiment to get it right.

Sensitive Skin Check: While it’s gentle, patch test on a small piece of fabric if you’re super sensitive. I once had a client who reacted to everything—turns out, she was just allergic to drama.

Borax Safety: Borax is natural, but ca be an irritant, Keep it out of reach of kids and pets, and don’t inhale the powder while mixing—common sense, folks.

Soap Quality: Use a pure bar soap like Dr. Bronner’s. If it’s got synthetic fragrances, you’re just trading one chemical for another.

Oxygen Bleach: Not all brands are as clean as they claim. Check out EWG for a verified brand

Elevate It, Wise & Wild Style

Take this detergent to the next level with my wholistic approach:

Clean Air, Too: Pair this with my DIY air freshener recipe (coming soon to my blog) to keep your whole home toxin-free—laundry, air, everything.

Move Your Body: Sweat it out with my Peak Performance Training or Stretch for Performance Classes, coming soon on SPBTV. A clean body and clean clothes go hand in hand—plus, movement helps you detox from the inside out.

Nourish Inside Out: My Wise & Wild Wellness Program uses GAPS or Nourishing Traditions foods—think bone broth and fermented veggies—to support your body while you clean up your environment.

Stay Grounded: Take a quiet walk, get your bare feet on the ground and face in the sun. A pure life isn’t just about what you use—it’s about how you live.

Why It’s Worth Your Time

This DIY clothing detergent isn’t just about clean clothes—it’s about cleaning up your life, one load at a time. Experts like Dr. Steinemann and Shamban confirm what I’ve known for years: natural is better for your body and your home. It’s cheap, it’s effective, and it lets you wash with peace of mind—no chemicals, no guilt. Want to feel good about every part of your routine? Start here. Your clothes (and your conscience) will thank you.

Mix it, use it, love it—clean clothes are just the beginning of a cleaner life.

Tallow balm—or, in simpler terms, rendered beef fat—might sound unconventional, but it’s become my skincare hero. A few years ago, when my grandbaby stayed with us, a stubborn rash flared up on her legs. I refused to reach for medicated creams or chemical-laden lotions, so I dug into research and stumbled across tallow balm’s healing reputation for dry skin, eczema, and more. Claims even stretched to acne relief—though, with no pimples to test, I’ll leave that to others. What I can confirm? It cleared her rash beautifully. Intrigued, I tried it on myself and haven’t looked back. In my Wise & Wild Way program, where ancestral wisdom meets practical care, tallow balm’s a standout—nourishing skin and hair alike with pure, natural goodness.

Here’s why tallow balm, made from beef tallow, deserves a place in your beauty routine—and how to make it work for you.

A Personal Journey to Tallow

My tallow tale started with my grandbaby’s rash. After its success, I slathered it on my face, body, and even my coarse, wavy hair—each time, it delivered unmatched moisture. But buying it got pricey, so I sourced raw tallow from my local market, eager to DIY. First attempt? A gritty disaster—my husband was brushing clumps off me in bed. Lesson learned: tallow balm needs preparation. Armed with fresh know-how, I perfected my recipe, and now it’s a staple—smooth, effective, and oh-so-satisfying.

Why Tallow Balm Works Wonders

So, what makes tallow balm exceptional? It’s rendered animal fat—specifically beef tallow—strikingly similar to our skin’s natural sebum. This bio-compatibility means it meets your skin’s exact needs:

Intense Hydration: Packed with fatty acids like oleic and stearic, it sinks deep, soothing dryness without clogging pores—perfect for parched skin or the scalp beneath your curls.

Healing Relief: Vitamins A, D, E, K, and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) reduce inflammation, easing eczema, rashes, and scrapes with a gentle touch.

Pure and Non-Toxic: Unlike many “natural” products laced with preservatives, tallow balm skips the chemicals. What you put on your skin hits your bloodstream unfiltered—tallow’s edible-grade purity aligns with my rule: if you can’t eat it, don’t wear it.

Romans and Egyptians used it for burns and balms; 200 years ago, it was a household staple in soaps and lotions. Today, it’s a return to that wisdom—non-toxic skincare at its finest.

DIY Tallow Balm: Your Skin’s New Best Friend

Ready to craft your own? Here’s my tried-and-true recipe:

Ingredients:

1 cup organic grass-fed tallow (rendered or source organic from a trusted butcher)

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

Opt. 48 drops (or as desired) of essential oils of choice (lavender or chamomile, optional for scent and calm).

Directions

Melt tallow over gentle heat until it is liquid.

Remove tallow from heat. Add olive oil and stir to combine.

Add essential oils and stir again.

For solid tallow balm, pour balm into glass jar. Allow to harden in the refrigerator. When solid, let balm come to room temperature before using.

For whipped tallow balm, pour liquid balm mixture into a large mixing bowl. Allow to solidify at room temperature. When solid, whip with a hand or stand mixer until light and fluffy. Store in glass jar.

Store both forms of tallow balm at room temperature

How to Use It

Scoop a small amount, warm it in your hands, and massage into skin—face, body, or scalp (post-no-poo rinse). Use daily or as needed.

Curl Care Bonus

For my curly, coily, and wavy hair readers—familiar with my clay mask recipe—tallow balm’s a scalp treat. After my no-poo method or egg yolk wash, it hydrates coarse strands and roots without buildup, enhancing your natural shine. It’s a seamless addition to your curl-care arsenal. You only need a little!

Elevate It, Wise & Wild Style

Tallow balm’s benefits deepen with my holistic approach because beautiful skin and hair is a reflection of what’s happening on the inside

Cleanse Naturally: My no-poo method keeps your scalp pure—tallow follows suit for skin and hair.

Nourish Inside: Bone broth, oxtail, or organ meats—GAPS or Nourishing Traditions classics—support skin health from within with much-needed collagen.

Gut Power: Heal your gut and build a healthy microbiome the Wise & Wild Way with fermented veggies and cultured dairy—your skin’s silent allies.

Move It: Sweat and move at least 3x weekly. Get out into the sun, hit the sauna, and try one of my fitness classes on SPBTV. Exercise and sweat detoxes and boosts circulation, amplifying tallow’s effects.

Destress: Chronic stress unleashes cortisol, sparking inflammation, dryness, and breakouts that sap your skin’s vibrancy; destressing with meditation, yoga, or my Leading Lady Experience life coaching equips you with tools to calm your mind, enriching your life, and fostering a healthier you. Your skin will reward you with a radiant glow by easing inflammation and bolstering its natural resilience.

The Fine Print: What to Know

Tallow balm is safe for most, but source matters—opt for grass-fed beef to avoid hormones or antibiotics. Sensitive skin or beef allergies? Patch test first. It’s shelf-stable, but store it in a cool, dark place to preserve its potency—no fridge needed.

Why It’s a Keeper

Tallow balm delivers—profound moisture, healing relief, and pure simplicity—without the chemical baggage or steep cost. It’s cleared rashes, softened my skin, and tamed my coarse hair—a testament to its ancestral roots and modern appeal. Want radiant, healthy skin that reflects your natural vitality? Tallow’s your answer—make it, use it, love it.

Rub it in, feel the glow—tallow balm’s a timeless treasure.

Hair is personal—especially when you’re crowned with glorious curls, coils, or waves that cascade in a regal splendor. But when dryness, frizz, or flakes dim that majesty, the market rushes in with overpriced potions that rarely deliver. Enter bentonite clay: a volcanic ash-derived detox powerhouse with centuries of proven results. This isn’t hype—it’s a trusted ally for natural hair, celebrated by dermatologist Ava Shamban, trichologist Gretchen Friese (a hair and scalp specialist), and hairstylist Monaé Everett for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory magic.

In my Wise & Wild Way program, I champion clay’s versatility—it’s not only a hair savior but a detox bath gem too, as I’ve explored in my detox baths article. Pair it with GAPS or Nourishing Traditions foods, and you’ve got a formula for radiant, toxin-free beauty.

Let’s dive into why bentonite clay is a must for curly, coily, and wavy hair with a DIY mask, a bath bonus, and my hair loss clay insights—because you and your natural locks deserve the best.

What Is Bentonite Clay, Anyway?

Bentonite clay is a dense, mud-like substance mined from volcanic ash deposits in the smectite family. Its strength lies in a negative charge that pulls toxins—oil, buildup, dead skin—like a magnet. Used historically to cleanse skin, it’s a clarifying wonder for hair, especially the curly, coily, and wavy types that crave moisture and control. Shamban and Friese praise its ability to purify without parching—a perfect match for natural hair’s unique needs.

Why It’s a Champion for Curly, Coily, and Wavy Hair

Natural hair—those stunning curls, coils, and waves—shines with bentonite clay’s targeted care. Here’s why it’s a game-changer:

Hydrates Deeply: Curly and coily scalps, prone to dryness from psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis, drink up its moisture, soothing itchiness with a protective shield—vital for these delicate textures.

Wipes Out Dandruff: Shamban explains its charge lifts debris while its antimicrobial action tackles flakes—keeping your natural hair’s scalp pristine and flake-free.

Fortifies Roots: Friese notes it clears follicle toxins, cutting breakage and boosting thicker growth— as I’ve noted in my hair loss article.

Smooths Frizz: Everett calls it a frizz-tamer for “wavy to coily hair,” delivering hydration and strength to combat the fragility these beautiful types often face, per Shamban.

DIY Bentonite Clay Hair Mask: Simple and Effective

Ditch the overpriced salon hype—here’s how to nourish your natural curls at home:

Ingredients:

½ cup bentonite clay powder

6 Tbsp raw apple cider vinegar (ACV) for deep cleansing and to balance pH

3 Tbsp optional organic, pure oil (coconut, castor, or sweet almond) for extra hydration

3-9 Tbsp water (adjust for consistency)

Equipment:

Glass or Wood bowl (metal could neutralize or bind with the clay and plastic might leach)

Wood spoon

Spray bottle with filtered water

shower cap or cotton towel—if you’d prefer to avoid plastic

How to Make It:

Pour clay into a glass or wood bowl; blend in oil if using.

Add ACV, let it settle for 10-15 seconds, then mix in water until it’s thick like Greek yogurt.

How to Use It:

Apply to clean, damp curls in sections—keep a spray bottle handy if it dries mid-process.

Wrap with a shower cap or cotton towel for 25 minutes (opt: use a hooded dryer for deeper penetration).

Rinse, cleanse and condition with my no-poo method—a Wise & Wild Way staple.

Use mask monthly or as needed.

Tip: My no-poo method preserves your curls’ moisture post-clay, pairing perfectly with this mask or my hair loss clay recipes.

The Caveats: What to Watch For

Get a clean brand: Bentonite clay’s topical use is safe for most, but Friese notes trace lead levels (FDA: 37.5 micrograms/gram, akin to sweet potatoes) have been found in some brands. Make sure to find a clean brand such as the one recommended above.

Hair Types:

Sensitive scalp? Patch test first—to make sure it doesn’t irritate.

Oily or high-porosity curls? It might weigh them down, so experiment and see if this is right for you.

Bonus: Bentonite Clay Bath for Full-Body Detox

Your curls deserve love, but why not detox your whole body? Bentonite clay excels in baths too, as I’ve detailed in my detox bath article. Here’s how:

Ingredients:

1-2 cups bentonite clay

Water (to form a slurry)

How to Use:

Mix into a smooth slurry, stir into a warm bath, and soak 15-30 minutes (start at 10-15). Rinse off residue and moisturize.

Why It Works: It draws out impurities like heavy metals, softening skin while cleansing—a full-body boost for your natural beauty routine.

Elevate It, Wise & Wild Style

Maximize bentonite’s magic for your curls with my wholistic approach:

Swap Shampoo: Use my no-poo method or egg yolks for regular washing—to keep toxins off your scalp.

Move It: Sweat 3x weekly— get sun, sauna, and exercise. Check out my Peak Performance Training and Stretch For Performance Classes to get your body moving and to flush lymph and nurture your roots, as I’ve covered in my detox bath article.

Feed Growth: Bone broth or oxtail collagen strengthens curls from within.

Gut Power: My Wise & Wild Wellness Program—GAPS or Nourishing Traditions-inspired—uses fermented veggies, cultured dairy, animal fats, cholesterol-rich foods and organ meats to heal your gut and liver, and support your hormones—enhancing your hair’s glow.

Why It’s Worth Your Time

Bentonite clay delivers—deep hydration, a clean scalp, fortified curls—without the chemical overload or steep price tag. Science is catching up, but pros like Shamban and Friese, plus natural hair enthusiasts, vouch for its impact on curly, coily, and wavy textures. Want vibrant, healthy strands that celebrate your natural beauty? This clay’s your answer—test it, tweak it, make it yours.

Slather it on, soak it up—bentonite clay’s the real deal for beautiful, natural hair.
