Balancing Act - Issue 8: Section 1

Hello everyone, it has been awhile since I have posted anything new on Balancing Act and I do apologize. My schedule has been insanely crazy and though I hoped to produce Balancing Act videos, it looks like that endeavor must be put on hold. However, I will be posting more regularly on this blog. If you are new to BA then please start with the Intro (Welcome) and Issue#1 - to get you started on a glorious new year.

What I want to touch on in this post is dealing with depression and how you can choose habits that support you during down times. Now please note, if you feel your depression is serious or have any thoughts of suicide or harming yourself or others, please see a doctor- run to

your ER and get the urgent help you need. I am not doctor. so I cannot diagnose and my suggestions are not intended to replace a doctor's advise. But, I can share what what has worked for me.

We are in trying and questionable times. With the economy, the war, corrupt government (and the list can go on and on) it is hard to find anything to be upbeat about. Along with getting some requests on how to deal with feelings of depression, I myself have been feeling low as of late due to what is happening in the world around us- even falling into bad habits I thought I had kicked years ago. It is funny how you can work so hard for something good and destroy it in such a short span of time. And so I find myself having to kick myself in the rear. As I sat in the bath this morning I said to myself," I can't control my house being under construction and having no walls in places; I can't control that I have a huge family, with a houseful of animals and therefore can't keep the house as clean as I'd like; I can't control what is happening over in the middle east. I can't really control if I work again but what I do have control over is my own actions- I have control over ME. Now this isn't exactly a new thought, but one all of us can be reminded of every now and again.

And so that is what I want to remind you of as well. All we have is the ability to control our own behaviors and though we may not know the future we can make sure we can be physically and mentally fit to meet it.

So, here are my suggestions if you are needing some help for getting over the blues.

Eat the right foods. Over-indulging in that sugary, fat-filled cake or juicy hamburger seems like a choice that will make us feel better, but in reality will only make our situation worse. So support yourself with plenty of good sources of protein and veggies. Make sure you eat more often- every three hours to keep your energy high and fuel your brain.

Add in more fish oil or omega 3 from other sources. Make sure it is pure. Nordic Naturals is one I highly recommend. It is tested in an independent lab for purity and efficacy. Omega 3 fats have been studied to improve depression and of course over-all health.
